THE VENICE BOULEVARD

LANDSCAPE COMPLETION PROJECT

AND CREATION OF

THE VENICE GARDEN CLUB

A NEIGHBORHOOD GARDEN CLUB:
Join us in forming a VENICE GARDEN CLUB: Let's roll up our sleeves, get our hands dirty, and make Venice green! IT'S OUR FRONT YARD.

The Venice Garden Club will bring neighbors together to accomplish many public (and private) landscaping projects. Additionally, It will host a Renown Landscaper Speaker Series, to inspire and educate about landscape design, xeroscaping, plant selection, small spaces, public spaces and more.

BACKGROUND:
In 1996, recognizing that Venice Boulevard is Los Angeles’ gateway artery to the Ocean, The City of Los Angeles adopted The Venice Boulevard Planting Design (Design Permit BD-40197).

The Venice Action Committee orchestrated a huge project: The Design Plan and planting of thousands of trees. However, only a portion of the landscaping, including that surrounding The Venice Public Library, was completed.

Funding was discontinued by the past City Council Member leaving most of the landscape plan, native grasses, ground cover and flowering plants to be installed. In some areas sprinklers were installed, and function to water bare dirt. Many islands are covered with blacktop and/or errant shrubbery. The visual effect is our Venice Boulevard is an unsafe slum-like corridor, enjoyed primarily by homeless squatters.

OBJECTIVES:
This project is to re-focus the City’s efforts to complete the Landscaping of Venice Boulevard. Where necessary, plant materials must be slightly changed from the original design to prevent safety and squatter issues which have arisen.

Our Venice Garden Club will assist and instigate the continued greening of Venice.

CURRENT STATUS:
A Los Angeles Community Beautification Grant has been awarded to landscape and provide sculptural seating for one small but highly visible corner of Venice Boulevard: South Venice Boulevard at Ocean Way and Mildred. See The Venice Mosaic Eggs Corner Park Project.

A Neighborhood Council, Community Improvement Project Proposal, to landscape five prominent islands on Venice Boulevard, is currently pending.

The Venice Garden Club is now forming. Join in.
