March 2008
THE ANNUAL VENICE INVITATIONAL TEMPORARY
SCULPTURE PARK PROJECT
aka The Venice Annuale
DESCRIPTION: Beginning this Spring, and continuing annually, 20 sculptures created by art and architecture students will be selected to be constructed and installed at Centennial Park in Venice, California, to form a temporary, annual sculpture park for all to enjoy. Sunday's in the Park, the sculpture will be accompanied by Music and Performances. (Our name "The Venice Annuale," is a play on the world renown arts event in Italy: The Venice Biannale).

TIME & PLACE: Our Sculpture Park will be installed May and June 2008 at Centennial Park, our prominent neighborhood park on Venice Boulevard between Abbot Kinney Boulevard and the Venice Public Library at Ocean Way.

INVITED STUDENT ARTISTS: Art and architecture students from area universities (Otis, UCLA, USC, SCIARC, SMC, West LA, Loyola), will be invited to submit designs. Proposals may be from individuals or as collaborations.

THEME: This year, we invite students to propose sculptures that will engage the public (may be kinetic or interactive) and are "narrative," (honoring our proximity to the Venice Public Library). Students may also present their own conceptual basis.

SELECTED DESIGNS: Each year, approximately 20 designs will be selected by our jury (comprised of public art and architecture professionals and members of the Venice community) with LA Department of Cultural Affairs based upon the following criteria: creativity of design, concept, variety, materials, and scale, feasibility of construction, durability outdoors, safety, and budget. The above images are simulations of the variety we might find.

COMMUNITY GROUPS: Youth groups (including: Boys & Girls, ReDiscover, VCHC, VArts, and area schools) will assist in site design, preparation and construction of sculptural furniture for the event and on-site special programs. Sponsors invited.

HISTORIC MARKERS: Historic images and objects from Venice c1900 will add our distinctive flavor to the sculpture event. Sponsors and donors invited.

BUDGET: Each student/sculptor will be given a budget of $1,000 to cover all costs of construction, installation and fees. Additionally, in this first year, that sum will be matched to cover all event costs including: site preparation, sculptural furniture, music and performances, installation, lighting, permits and insurance. The total budget is: $40,000, funded by private, and if available, public donations to our affiliated 501c3 corporation.

SPECIAL EVENTS: Music, performances and readings will be scheduled on Sunday afternoons throughout the Sculpture Park Season. Additionally, we will host special events, on opening day and several designated days to honor the student artists, recognize all Patorns and Donors, and for special fund raising activities. Reserve your dates today.
MEDIA: Press releases and personal invitations will be sent to the Arts, City, Neighborhood, Travel and general Media to the opening and special events.

FUNDING / DONATIONS: Donations are invited from area individuals, businesses, and organizations to fund the first year of operations. All donations are tax deductible, payable to our affiliated 501c3. All donors will be recognized in our program, publications and donor boards on site and invited to private events in the Park: $5,000 Founders Circle Patron; $2,000 Patron of the Arts; $500 Colonnade Patron; $250 Gondola Patron.
